REVIEW OF FASHION AND ANTI-FASHION BY TED POLHEMUS Fashion & Anti-fashion: an anthropology of clothing and adornment was written by myself and Lynn Procter and published by Thames & Hudson [London] in 1978. Although once described to me by a fashion college librarian as ‘our all time most stolen book’ it has been out of print for about 20 years. Sometimes Amazon.com and other booksellers have second hand copies but isn’t it about time that this classic (if I do say so myself) was revised and reprinted? Re-reading it after something like 15 years I find that the writing style is too stilted and academic, that the photographs and design needs re-doing but that the basic ideas remain valid and stimulating (except that now I would replace the word anti-fashion with the more positive, style). - Ted Polhemus |
